Following the successful cooperation in the CABRI-Volga project,
Rupprecht Consult and the International
Ocean Institute (Malta) - this time in close cooperation with
its operational centre ZMT
Bremen (Center for Tropical Marine Ecology) - joined forces
to evaluate ICZM strategies in Europe between January and August
of 2006.
ICZM was adopted by the European Union as a powerful integrated
and participatory territorial approach that is understood as "a
dynamic, multi-disciplinary and iterative process to promote sustainable
management of coastal zones".
Following recommendations of the European Parliament and of the
Council, each coastal Member State was expected to elaborate and
implement a national ICZM strategy by February 2006.
Whether this important milestone could be reached, to which
degree and how it would be reached and which lessons could be
learned for the way forward was essentially the substance of the
evaluation.
The results of this evaluation (Final Evaluation Report) assisted
the European Commission to review their ICZM Recommendation and
to submit an evaluation report to the European Parliament and
Council by the end of 2006 for further Community action.
