Evaluation of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) in Europe

  Croatia

Status

No National Report has been submitted from Croatia in response to EU ICZM Recommendation. A number of auxiliary documents were consulted for the assessment of ICZM in Croatia (see below).

Reporting Institution

Ministry of Environmental Protection, Physical Planning & Construction (MEPSPC)
Environmental Protection Division
Marine & Coastal Protection Department
Rijeka

The Marine & Coastal Protection Department was established in 2000, as the result of a merging between the Ministry of Territorial Management, Construction & Housing and the State Directorate for Environment and Nature Protection.

There is no government of non-government body explicitly designated to be a leading organization for ICZM. The Ministry of the Environmental Protection, Spatial Planning and Construction (MEPSPC) is indirectly responsible for ICZM, particularly with regard to its international obligations, such as implementing the Barcelona Convention or the EU ICZM Recommendation. There is an Office for the Adriatic located in Rijeka, but its responsibilities are quite limited and no legal power with regard to ICZM is allocated to it.
